A tragic fuel tanker crash in Darnum has claimed the life of a truck driver after his vehicle left the roadway and overturned in the early hours of the morning, triggering a major emergency response and widespread transport disruption across Victoria’s southeast.
The incident occurred shortly before 6:30am on the Princes Freeway near Darnum, approximately 110 kilometres east of Melbourne. According to police reports, the B-double fuel tanker was travelling eastbound when it struck roadside cable barriers. The force of the impact caused the driver’s cabin to separate from the twin trailers, before it collided with nearby trees and came to rest on its side. The driver, who was believed to be the sole occupant of the truck, died at the scene.
Emergency services described the scene as “complex” and “horrific,” with the overturned tanker releasing a significant quantity of fuel onto the road and surrounding bushland. The spill created hazardous fumes in the area, prompting warnings from fire authorities and a large-scale containment operation. Crews worked to drain the remaining fuel from the tanker before the wreckage could be safely removed, as concerns over environmental contamination and fire risk were assessed.
Despite the fuel leak spreading into nearby vegetation, authorities later indicated there was no immediate evidence of long-term environmental damage, though monitoring continued in cooperation with environmental protection agencies. The primary concern remained the safe clearance of the crash site and restoration of road access.
The crash caused major disruption to transport networks across the region. All eastbound lanes of the Princes Freeway between Darnum and Yarragon were closed for an extended period, forcing motorists onto long detours through surrounding towns. Drivers were advised to expect significant delays as emergency crews managed the scene and cleaned up the fuel spill.
Public transport was also affected, with V/Line train services between Warragul and Traralgon suspended. Replacement coach services were introduced, extending travel times by more than an hour and a half for some passengers. Commuters travelling further east toward Bairnsdale were also required to transfer to buses for part of their journey.
Authorities confirmed that a separate minor collision occurred behind the tanker crash site, although no injuries were reported in that secondary incident. Investigators are now working to determine what caused the truck to leave the roadway, with police stating that it is too early to speculate on the exact factors involved.
